MODESTO — Ivan Almanza of the King City Boxing Club put his club on the map as he won a championship belt at Saturday’s Louie Jordan Championship Tournament in Modesto. Almanza defeated his opponent from Merced by unanimous decision to win the 60-pound match.

“The fight was a rematch as Ivan had beaten the same opponent before in Paso Robles,” said Coach Rodolfo Tapia. “Ivan really prepared for the fight by sparring at San Ardo and in Salinas. He went up in weight as he is growing and he doesn’t want to have to be cutting weight. We were all very happy when he won his first championship of his career.”

Ivan Vasquez fought at 118-120 pounds and Kevin Perez fought at 132 pounds. Both fighters lost by split decisions.

“My boys had good fights,” said Tapia. “When the fight ends by split decision you know it was a good fight. They landed punches and defended really well.”

On Saturday the Kevin Perez and Ivan Almanza will compete in the Manuel Torres Classic Boxing Tournament in Tulare.
