Loaves and Fishes opens doors to feed those in need

Brock Hill/South County Newspapers - Citizens stand in line at the King City Loaves and Fishes on Nov. 21. Organizers estimate Loaves and Fishes serves between 200 and 300 people each week. It will be open Fridays through mid-May from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. Last week, it opened on Wednesday instead as Thanksgiving fell on a Thursday.

KING CITY — Loaves and Fishes, a community relief program run by volunteers, opened its doors this past week on Nov. 21 in hopes of feeding some of King City’s needy.

Normally open Fridays, Loaves and Fishes opened on Wednesday last week in order to make sure people had food for Thanksgiving.

Outside Loaves and Fishes, a long line of people extended from the entrance of the building back down the street. Some people were leaving carrying grocery bags full of food, some people were carrying clothes, and one person was carrying a wooden chair. Inside the building, people were let in one at a time. There was a long table stacked with grocery bags full of food, and at one end of it a man was handing the bags out. At the same time, a group of men continued to fill new bags full of food at the other end of the table. Around the corner, there were more tables, these with clothes and other odds and ends laid out on them. Near the exit, director Anna McNett stood.
