SoMoCo teams hit hardwoods, fields, mats

SOUTH MONTEREY COUNTY Basketball, soccer and wrestling fans will have plenty of action to catch this week as the winter sports season opens up with games and matches throughout the South County area.

Boys basketball games Tuesday included Gonzales High at Alisal, King City at Watsonville, and Greenfield hosting Everett Alvarez. Today, King City hosts Anzar High School and Soledad High plays Christopher High in Gilroy.

In boys soccer, the King City Mustangs played Alisal High in Salinas on Monday at the Oak Grove Gold Cup Tournament, traveled to Salinas for a game at North Salinas, and will play at San Benito High School on Friday. Gonzales High begins the soccer season with a Dec. 5 game in Watsonville against the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs. Soledad High had a scrimmage with Alisal on Tuesday and will host North Monterey County tonight in Soledad. On Friday the Aztecs play at Salinas High School.

In girls soccer games this week, Gonzales plays Friday at Everett Alvarez and has a scheduled contest with Notre Dame of Salinas on Dec. 3. Soledad hosted Everett Alvarez yesterday, and King City will play the Eagles on Monday Dec. 3.

South County wrestlers take to the mats tomorrow in King City as the defending champion Mustangs host the Mission Trail Athletic League Novice Tournament. The tournament is set up for any first-time wrestler. Gonzales High School and King City will participate in the Harbor Frosh-Soph Tournament this Saturday.
