USFS dedicates Monterey Ranger District Office

KING CITY — The United States Forest Service, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, inaugurated and displayed the new facilities used for the Monterey Ranger District Office, one of five of the administrative districts of the Los Padres National Services, last Thursday.

The original office was built on Mildred Street in 1937. The new building runs parallel to Division Street, but is still on Mildred.

The new building is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver-certified, due in large part to its straw-bale walls. The building also features a beamed ceiling, more ample parking and a public conference center. The building was constructed with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Construction started in May of 2011.

The Monterey Ranger District includes 330,000 acres of land extending from Monterey to slightly north of San Luis Obispo County. The district also includes most of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. The event program states that 87 percent of lands in the district are designated as wilderness.

The building has already been used by the staff for a few months now, but needed to be dedicated with a proper ceremony. ...
