The dugout canoe, hewn from a single log, lay in river mud as the tide rose. Rain fell heavily, pooling in the stern of the canoe. Kenyan jungle overhung the river’s shores, the scene misted grey from water in the air. It was one of those warm rains you happily ran around in as a kid, soaked to the skin.
