King City Golf Course fun for all ages

KING CITY - July 16 marked the first day of the new Junior Golf Program, which is less than three weeks after the new management team of David and Yolanda Sanchez took over the King City Golf course.

There has already been a marked improvement on the course and grounds due to some much-needed repairs in the sprinkler system, and a whole new positive attitude and pride in the course as a whole. The Junior golf program had a great turn out of 15 participants on it's first day of operation, and with the news that the management is trying to get First Tee of Pebble Beach involved with its new program, it continues to be good news moving forward for the young golfers in the South County area.

"It's everything that we thought it would be," said manager Yolanda Sanchez.

Twilight golf now starts at a new earlier 2 p.m. time.

"My parents love to golf, so I want to get better so we can play as a family," said 16-year-old beginner Allyson Hughes. "It's going to take a lot of practice, but I am excited."

The Junior Golf Program is broken down into three categories of beginners, intermediate and advanced. The program is an excellent way to learn and improve the basics of golf with professional supervision.

"I'm trying to get better and lower my score before I play my second year on the King City golf team," said Joshua Richardson of King City.

On July 30, the Junior Golf Camp will hold a three-hole golf contest in King City.

The course has had several loyal golfers over the years, but none more so than Red Taylor, Jerry Bumbalough, and Phil Garcia. This trio of golfers has been playing early morning at the King City Golf Course four-to-five times per week for over 18 years.

"We don't play on Thursdays because we need a day off," said Bumbalough.

These guys have a great time together and never stop joking around, laughing and having a good time weather it be on the course or in the club house.

"We like to get up and get out of the house," added Red Taylor.

These guys are all pretty good golfers and they have a lot of fun together in the early morning hours when it is sunny and beautiful before the South County winds start to blow around 2 p.m.

"They call us the dawn patrol," added Taylor.

The trio has been friends for 35 years and because of the laughter and friendship they share they will be around many more years to come telling old golf stories or just joking and poking fun at each other.

Another old-timer who has been around the course for the last 15 years is pro shop assistant, Bob Garcia. "The attitude from everybody is positive, and things are moving forward," said Garcia.
