Alfred “Fred” C. Vierra, Jr. 81, of Salinas, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013. He was born September 21, 1931, in Oakland.
He was a member of St. Theodore Church in Gonzales (former Altar boy), American Legion Post #81, Salinas Elks Lodge #614, SIRS, Masonic Lodge, Marine Corps League, Society of American Foresters and Gonzales Rotary Club.
Alfred graduated from Gonzales High School, and attended Hartnell College. He served in the Marine Corps.
He was a South County businessman. He served on Gonzales Planning Commission and Monterey County Grand Jury. He started the annual Gonzales Fourth of July Celebration, was a past chairman for Gonzales Centennial Celebration, past president of the Gonzales Booster Club, Gonzales Volunteer Fire Dept. and Gonzales Chamber of Commerce, and while in business in Soledad he was past president of the Soledad Chamber of Commerce and Soledad Rotary Club.
Alfred loved to travel, fish, cook and spend time with his family, grandchildren and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. and Helen Vierra.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane Vierra of Salinas; children, Cindy Vierra of Salinas, Jeff (Cari) Vierra of Salinas, Annette Vierra of Salinas; sister, Violet Bernard of Salinas; granddaughter, Rachel Vierra of Salinas; and grandson, Jake Vierra of Salinas.
Vigil service was held Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Theodores Church, 116 S. Beldon St., Gonzales, CA 93926.
