Peter Martinez, resident of Gonzales, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Emma Martinez; daughters, Laura Martinez and Merry Martinez; his brothers, David Martinez and Sam Martinez; various grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Peter is a lifelong resident of Gonzales, where he is well known in his community and remembered for his boxing career. He was the Monterey County featherweight champion and became pro by the time he was 18 years old.
Peter was a contender for the state featherweight championship, but due to a car accident his boxing career was ended. He retired from Spreckels Sugar Company after 24 years and volunteered with the Monterey County Food Bank for several years. He enjoyed watching the San Francisco Giants play, reading the newspaper, and spending time with his family.
Memorial services were held January 7 at St. Theodore’s Church, 116 S. Belden St. in Gonzales.
An inurnment will follow at a later date.
