Arrest warrant issued in 7-Eleven robbery; officers say suspect matches description from Tuesday homicide

Modified: Saturday, Dec 8th, 2012

Ruben Chavez Laveaga

KING CITY – The King City Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for Ruben Chavez Laveaga in connection with a Tuesday morning robbery at the King City 7-Eleven store, and police have also said his description matches that of the suspect in Tuesday's fatal stabbing.

According to a release from the KCPD, on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at approximately 1:50 a.m., an armed robbery occurred at the 7-Eleven store located at 801 Broadway St. The suspect, described as being a Hispanic male, 6-feet-0-inches, 210 pounds, wearing a hooded, camouflage jacket, blue jeans and dark-colored shoes with white soles, grabbed two packs of beer and exited the store without paying. When the clerk pursued him out of the store, according to the release, the suspect assaulted him in the head, brandished a large seven-inch, fixed-blade, combat-style knife, and then threatened to harm the clerk if he continued to pursue him. The suspect was last seen fleeing southbound on Canal Street.

On Friday, Dec. 7, Laveaga was positively identified as being the suspect in the armed robbery and an arrest warrant was obtained. Further follow-up led investigators to believe that the physical description of suspect Laveaga also matched that of the suspect seen fleeing the scene of the homicide that occurred later that morning in the 500 block of Bassett Street. At this time, suspect Laveaga is outstanding and should be considered armed and dangerous.

The KCPD asks that anyone having information related to either one of these two cases contact Sgt. Alejandrina Tirado at 831-386-5950. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may contact the WeTIP Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.

King City Police Department is working in conjunction with personnel from other south Monterey County police agencies and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.
