KING CITY — There was no 50- or 60-point blowout this time in the Little Big Game, but King City did manage to hang on to the megaphone for another year after a 35-24 win over Gonzales last Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

The Spartans have not beaten the Mustangs since the 2004 season, when they won by a 21-7 score.

“Gonzales has some players over there, and they played us tough,” said King City head coach Mac Villanueva. “Kevin (Bonincontri) had his team ready to play.”

King City played most of the game without starting quarterback Jake Stephens, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee on the first series of plays.

“It took a little out of our kids when they saw Jake go down, but they have faith in Nicolas Sinclair to come in and replace him at quarterback,” Villanueva said. “We also lost our starting guard and another one of our team captains, Isaac Polanco, at the start of the second quarter to a knee injury. If by chance we had made it to the playoffs, we would have limped in with two of our starters and captains unable to play. Nick (Sinclair) did a good job at quarterback and Gilbert Lizardi was strong in Isaac’s place.”
