KING CITY — The Monterey County Migrant Education State Speech and Debate Tournament is gearing up for the annual event to take place in March.
“We are working with migrant staff in schools and recruiting students to participate,” said Constantino Silva, Coordinator of Migrant Education for Region XVI. “We open the invitation and sign kids up on a voluntary basis.”
Participants from both the middle-school and high-school level from the migrant program participate in speech and debate in either English or Spanish. Silva said it is starting to become one of those things students look forward to every year.
“Students do it because they are motivated intrinsically to do it,” Silva said.
